Café Combats SNAP Ending

A volunteer-run café in Portland, Oregon, called Heretic Coffee Co., has launched a community initiative to help people losing their food assistance benefits. With changes to SNAP cutting off aid to thousands in the area, the café began offering free breakfast for those affected. Anyone can simply walk in, order a “SNAP breakfast” that includes a meal and coffee, and it’s completely free— no questions asked or proof required. The response from the community has been overwhelming, with more than $180,000 raised in donations within just a few days to keep the program running. The effort not only provides immediate relief to families, seniors, and individuals who rely on food benefits, but also restores dignity and hope during a time of uncertainty. It’s a powerful example of how local businesses can step up to fill critical gaps and care for their communities when government safety nets fall short.
