Litter Picking Sport

A sport called spogomi—originating in Japan—turns litter-picking into a global competitive activity. Its central premise is simple: the real winner is the environment. Participants in teams of three race to collect as much trash as possible from a specified area within a set time-limit, then sort and weigh their haul. More than 165,000 people in dozens of countries have taken part, and together they’ve collected over 440 million pounds of trash. Spogomi has reached all corners of the planet, and even has a World Cup competition each year. Points are often highest for items like cigarette butts, which may be small but carry big environmental harm. The sport is inclusive for all ages and abilities, and participants say spogomi shifts the way they view litter in their communities. The unique sport is mobilizing people to tackle litter on a large scale, making helping the environment a fun and beneficial activity.
