‘Bar Fairies’ Fight Drunk Driving
A mother and daughter in Montana are turning personal tragedy into a movement to prevent drunk driving through small acts of kindness. After 21-year-old Bobby Dewbre was killed by a drunk driver in 2023 while crossing the street, his mother and sister founded Montana Bar Fairies, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging safer decisions behind the wheel. Every weekend, volunteers visit bar parking lots looking for cars left overnight, leaving $5 coffee gift cards and thank-you notes for drivers who chose not to drive home after drinking. Each note also shares the story of someone who lost their life to drunk driving, helping raise awareness of the consequences. What began as a small family initiative has grown into a nationwide movement with new chapters emerging across the country. The organization also helped advocate for Bobby's Law, which passed in 2025 to strengthen penalties for fatal drunk-driving offenses. Through kindness, education, and advocacy, the Dewbre family hopes to honor Bobby's memory while preventing other families from experiencing a similar loss.
