Thanks to decades of coordinated conservation efforts worldwide, green sea turtles have officially been taken off of the endangered species list. A recent assessment found that global green sea turtle populations have increased by around 28% since the 1970s. The improvements came from protecting nesting beaches, stopping or reducing harvests of turtles and their eggs, using Turtle Excluder Devices in fishing gear, and other community-based protections. Green sea turtles play important roles in marine ecosystems, such as maintaining healthy seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Their rebound is a major conservation win that demonstrates how long-term efforts can really make a difference in reversing endangered species status.
