The London School of Economics is launching the world’s first research center for animal sentience this fall, supported by a £4 million grant from the Jeremy Coller Foundation. Led by Professor Jonathan Birch, the Animal Sentience Center was created to push back against the rise of industrial farming and revive Britain’s historic leadership in animal welfare. It brings together philosophers, scientists, vets, AI experts, and legal scholars to pursue “ethical moonshots”—bold research and policy initiatives aimed at improving how animals are treated. Projects will include developing AI systems that consider animal welfare, crafting protections for often-overlooked invertebrates like crabs and insects, and creating guidance that can inform laws and reshape public attitudes. The goal is to turn cutting-edge science into meaningful change, recognizing the sentience of animals and advocating for their well-being in both policy and everyday life.
