World’s Happiest Children

Dutch children have once again been ranked the happiest in the developed world, according to UNICEF’s latest child wellbeing report. Experts say their high levels of happiness stem from strong support systems at home, school, and within their communities. Dutch parents often work part-time, allowing them to spend more time with their children, while schools place less emphasis on competition and more focus on wellbeing, social connection, and healthy habits. The country’s ban on smartphones in schools has also been linked to improved concentration and stronger social environments. Children are encouraged to develop independence from a young age, often biking to school and around their communities on their own, helping build confidence and freedom. Researchers also point to low levels of bullying, greater economic and gender equality, open communication between parents and children, and access to cultural and educational opportunities as key factors contributing to happier, healthier childhoods.
