British Paralympian and surgeon John McFall is on track to become the first person with a physical disability to live and work in space. After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident at age 19, McFall went on to win a Paralympic bronze medal, become an orthopedic surgeon, and join the European Space Agency's astronaut program. The UK Space Agency is partnering with Vast, a commercial space station company, to send McFall to space in as early as 2027. The mission will involve conducting research aboard space station Haven-1 on how spaceflight affects the human body and modern prosthetic limbs. Scientists believe the work could lead to advances in prosthetic design, rehabilitation programs, and treatments for conditions such as osteoporosis and muscle loss. The mission would mark a major step forward for inclusion in space exploration, helping demonstrate that physical disabilities do not have to be a barrier to careers in science, medicine, or astronomy.
