Growing Tree Chairs

A creative project in the UK is showing how trees can be used to produce furniture while they are still growing. Known as Britain’s first “furniture orchard,” the initiative carefully guides young willow, ash, and oak trees into the shapes of chairs, tables, and lamps over many years, allowing the finished pieces to be harvested with far less waste than traditional woodworking. By shaping the trees as they grow, the process eliminates much of the cutting, carving, and manufacturing typically required to make furniture. The project is also helping restore biodiversity by planting thousands of trees, creating wildlife habitats, and capturing carbon as the furniture grows. Supporters hope the orchard will inspire new ways of thinking about sustainable design, demonstrating how nature and craftsmanship can work together to create beautiful, functional products while benefiting the environment.
