Solar Power in India

In rural India, solar power is transforming lives by bringing reliable electricity to remote communities. The Selco Foundation, with support from the Ikea Foundation, has launched an initiative to equip 25,000 state-run primary health care centers with solar energy systems. In villages like Basavanagiri Hadi in Karnataka, solar-powered tele-clinics now provide essential medical services, including diagnostics and virtual consultations, eliminating the need for long, costly journeys to distant hospitals. Beyond healthcare, solar energy is empowering local entrepreneurs—tailors, blacksmiths, and shopkeepers—by enabling them to operate efficiently and increase their incomes. This sustainable approach not only improves health and economic outcomes but also enhances safety and quality of life in these communities.
