Oktoberfest Dachshund Derby

Chester Racecourse in Cheshire, England—the oldest operating racecourse in the UK—hosted its first ever Dachshund Derby as part of its Oktoberfest Season Finale celebrations. Seven sausage dogs braved the rain to take on the 50-meter dash around the parade ring, cheered on by their owners in a nod to the traditional horse races usually held there. Dressed in numbered shirts, and in some cases Bavarian outfits to match the Oktoberfest theme, the pups put on a race to remember. Five-year-old Nellie, a standard wirehaired dachshund, claimed the title of top dog and trotted off with her new toy champagne and pretzel treats, while her owner Melanie Ashley received a real bottle of bubbly. The event captured the festive spirit of Oktoberfest while celebrating the charm of these little dogs, leaving organizers and owners already looking forward to next year’s derby.
