Doctors in China have made history by performing the world’s first 5G-powered remote robotic surgery at a very high altitude — over 4,500 meters above sea level in Nagqu, Tibet. Surgeons in a hospital thousands of kilometers away controlled robotic surgical tools in real time to help with a urological operation, working together with medical teams in Tibet. The altitude and remoteness presented serious challenges to everything from the equipment’s stability to the speed and clarity of the 5G connection, but extensive testing and custom preparation made it possible. The success of this procedure shows how advanced technology can help bring high‐quality healthcare to extremely remote and hard-to-reach places, and opens up new possibilities for treating patients in regions that are traditionally underserved.
