Mouse Inspires Aging Research
Scientists have identified the golden spiny mouse, a small desert rodent native to the Middle East, as a promising new model for understanding healthy aging. Unlike most mice, which experience rapid physical and cognitive decline as they age, golden spiny mice remain active, fertile, and mentally sharp well into old age while showing little of the chronic inflammation that typically accompanies aging. Researchers at Yale School of Medicine found that the animals maintain healthier immune systems and preserve key organs that normally deteriorate over time. The discovery could help scientists better understand why aging affects some species differently and may eventually lead to new treatments that promote healthier aging in humans. While the research is still in its early stages, it offers an encouraging new direction in the search for ways to extend not just lifespan, but the number of healthy years people can enjoy.
