Barber Training in Aboriginal Communities

Jul 20
1 min read

Australian barber Jon James is helping bring confidence, connection, and new career opportunities to a remote Aboriginal island by offering free haircuts and teaching barbering skills. Through the Fade Wellbeing Barbering Program, James leads workshops on Mornington Island, where many residents face significant economic challenges, including high unemployment and poverty rates. Participants receive hands-on training in haircutting, shaving, and other barbering techniques, along with their own professional barber kits so they can continue practicing their skills after the program ends. Beyond teaching a trade, the workshops create safe spaces for community members to connect, build confidence, and develop practical skills that can lead to future employment and a sustainable source of income. Local leaders hope the program will continue to empower residents and create lasting opportunities within the community.
