India Provides Wages for Housework

India has started a bold experiment to pay women for the domestic work they do at home, formally recognizing that tasks like childcare, elder care, cooking and cleaning are real economic contributions that are deserving of pay. The new policy provides direct cash transfers to women, compensating them for their domestic work and providing financial security for families. It’s a step towards a broader effort to address gender inequality by giving women economic freedom and acknowledging the important, and often overlooked, work they provide to keep families afloat. The initiative has sparked international interest as a potential model for how nations can rethink economic recognition of traditionally unpaid domestic labor.
