Algae Transforms Food Waste

Scientists have developed a promising new way to turn food waste into valuable, sustainable ingredients by using algae, offering both environmental and economic benefits. In this process, researchers feed food-waste streams to specially selected strains of microalgae, which then grow rapidly and convert nutrients into useful biomass. That algal biomass can be processed into high-value products such as animal feed, bioplastics, biofuels and nutritional supplements — providing an alternative to landfill disposal and cutting greenhouse gas emissions from food waste. By tapping the natural efficiency of algae to recycle nutrients, this innovation could help reduce waste, support circular economy goals, and create new green industries that transform everyday waste into products people and businesses need.
