Improving Literacy During Haircuts

Jonathan Escueta, owner of City Cuts barbershop in Pennsylvania, has created a heartwarming and inventive program to boost kids’ confidence: he pays them $3 to read aloud during their haircut. Drawing from his own childhood struggles with reading and public speaking, Escueta launched the “Books by Kids” initiative with the hope that practicing reading in a friendly, low-pressure setting would help shy children find their voice. Alongside his team of barbers, he offers this opportunity to every young client—encouraging literacy, self-assurance, and the realization that reading out loud can be empowering and fun. Over time, the initiative has become a community favorite, quietly nurturing confidence and communication skills one haircut at a time.
