The Return of Women’s Baseball

Professional women’s baseball is back in the United States for the first time in more than 70 years with the launch of the new Women’s Professional Baseball League. The league opened its inaugural season in Springfield, Illinois, with four teams and a 30-game schedule, creating a new professional pathway for female baseball players who previously had few opportunities to compete at the highest level. The historic first pitch was thrown by 99-year-old Maybelle Blair, who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1948 and helped inspire the story depicted in the film A League of Their Own. The new league features talented players from around the world and plans to expand further next season, giving more women the chance to pursue professional baseball and encouraging young players to follow their dreams.
