This month, Ireland is launching a new “Child 5–8 Leap Card” that allows children aged five to eight to ride buses, trains, and trams across the Transport for Ireland network for free—joining children under five who already travel free. About 263,000 kids will now benefit from this scheme, which encourages families to include public transport as part of everyday life and helps nurture sustainable travel habits right from childhood. Families can apply easily online, and kids will use the card just like adults—tapping on and off when boarding transit services. This move represents a meaningful boost for household budgets and marks a big step toward a more accessible, inclusive, and greener transportation system.
