Turning Wind Turbines into Homes

A Swedish energy company teamed up with a Dutch design studio to transform the top part of an old wind turbine into a tiny, eco‑friendly home. The wind turbine was originally built for generating power in Austria for two decades, but now serves as a small living space complete with a working kitchen, bathroom, living area, and even off‑grid extras like solar panels, a heat pump, and a solar water heater. The home recently made its public debut at Dutch Design Week, showcasing how we can creatively reuse materials from retired infrastructure instead of sending them to landfills. The project also highlights how this idea could scale—there are thousands of wind turbine parts worldwide that could potentially be repurposed into homes or other useful structures, turning what would be waste into something meaningful.
