France’s Push to End Fast Fashion

France is taking aim at fast fashion with a new law designed to curb the environmental impact of companies like Shein and Temu. The country will introduce escalating fees on low-cost clothing, with penalties tied to factors such as a product’s environmental footprint, while also restricting advertising by the biggest fast-fashion retailers. The law is intended to discourage overproduction and make sustainable clothing more competitive as the fashion industry struggles to reduce its climate impact. Greenhouse gas emissions in the fashion industry have increased 14% over the past two years, and much of that is due to the production of materials like polyester which rely on fossil fuels. France hopes its approach can encourage consumers and companies to prioritize lower-impact clothing and help push the broader industry toward a more sustainable future.
