US Life Expectancy Hits Record High

New federal data shows Americans are living longer than ever before, with US life expectancy reaching a record high of 79 years in 2024. The increase was driven in part by significant declines in overdose deaths, COVID-related deaths, and other major health risks. Men and women both saw gains in life expectancy, with improvements reported across all racial and ethnic groups as well. Health officials say the numbers reflect progress in public health, addiction treatment, and medical care, offering a hopeful sign after years of declining life expectancy during the pandemic and opioid crisis. While challenges remain, experts are optimistic that US life expectancy will continue improving over the next several years as long as current public health improvements are sustained.
