Festival Honors Young Caregivers

A unique festival in the UK is giving young carers—children and teenagers who regularly look after family members with illnesses, disabilities, or other care needs—a chance to simply be kids again. Held annually in Hampshire, the Young Carers Festival welcomes hundreds of young people ages 11 to 17 for a weekend filled with music, kayaking, climbing, silent discos, fair rides, and campfire-style fun, offering a break from the adult responsibilities many carry every day. For many attendees, it’s the only time all year they can fully step away from caregiving and be surrounded by others who understand their experiences without explanation. Young caregivers often face social isolation, stress, missed childhood experiences, and are largely unseen by society. The festival gives these kids and teens a meaningful opportunity to build friendships and lasting support systems that help carers feel confident, loved, and seen— allowing them to show up as their best selves for their family members in need.
