Turning Jails Into Green Hubs

The Regional Plan Association and Rhode Island School of Design partnered up to create plans to transform New York’s Rikers Island into a green energy hub. The idea will upgrade New York City’s electrical grid, making it more sustainable, and provide jobs to former inmates. Rikers is a jail complex that houses thousands of inmates, but is legally required to close by 2027. These green energy plans, which include solar arrays and new wastewater facilities, outline how the island can be utilized to make New York City more energy efficient once the infamous jail shuts its doors.
