Increasing National Park Accessibility

Zion National Park has become the first U.S. national park to own an all-terrain wheelchair for public use, helping make its trails accessible to visitors with disabilities, mobility challenges, or injuries. The Extreme Motus wheelchair was donated through the nonprofit 2LIV4 and is designed to travel over rugged terrain that can be impossible to navigate with a traditional wheelchair. Visitors can borrow the chair for free from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center on a first-come, first-served basis and use it on a number of trails throughout the park with the help of an assistant. The project has been years in the making and is part of a larger effort to make outdoor recreation more inclusive. Organizers hope Zion is just the beginning, with Utah’s four other national parks already taking steps toward offering similar equipment and giving more people the opportunity to experience the outdoors.
