Swim Team Saving Lives

A swim team in St. Louis is tackling the life-threatening racial gap in swimming proficiency and water safety. Historically, systemic racism and exclusion from public pools have led to generations of Black families lacking access to swimming lessons—contributing to a drowning rate for Black children nearly six times higher than that of White children. In response, the Gateway City Aquatic Club is not only training young swimmers but also offering lessons to their parents, creating a culture of safety, empowerment, and confidence across generations. For many families, it’s about far more than sport—it’s about reclaiming access, rewriting history, and ensuring that water is a source of joy, not fear.
