Three teenagers from Indore, India—Dhruv Chaudhary, Mithran Ladhania, and Mridul Jain—have developed an innovative, electricity-free refrigerator called the Thermavault. Utilizing a chemical reaction between salts like ammonium chloride and barium hydroxide octahydrate, the device can maintain temperatures suitable for storing vaccines and organ transplants for up to 12 hours without power. Their invention earned them the 2025 Earth Prize and a $12,500 award, which they plan to use to produce 200 units for testing in 120 hospitals. This sustainable solution holds promise for improving medical supply storage in remote areas lacking reliable electricity.
