Koidu Government Hospital in Kono District, Sierra Leone, has opened the Paul Farmer Maternal Center of Excellence, the country’s first state-of-the-art birthing center and a major milestone in expanding maternal and newborn care. In a nation that has faced some of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates, the new facility represents a hopeful turning point for families across the region. Within its first 24 hours, the center welcomed 13 healthy babies and provided care to 27 expectant mothers, immediately putting its services into action. The new wing includes a neonatal intensive care unit equipped to deliver lifesaving support and is staffed by highly trained medical professionals dedicated to providing safe, dignified care. Health leaders are optimistic that with improved access to quality treatment, outcomes for mothers and newborns will continue to improve in the years ahead.
