A Michigan mother who once relied on food assistance is helping families access groceries with dignity through a growing network of Shame-Free Pantries. After experiencing the stigma of food insecurity herself, Alyssa Curtis founded the initiative to stock small neighborhood pantries with free food, diapers, toiletries, and other everyday essentials—available 24 hours a day with no questions asked. What began as a way to support her local community has expanded to dozens of pantries across the state, all operating on the simple principle of "take what you need, leave what you can." By removing barriers and judgment, the program is making it easier for struggling families to get help while inspiring neighbors to support one another through small acts of generosity.
