In parts of the Northeast U.S., volunteers, wildlife staff and rescuers have been hard at work this winter saving hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles— turtles that become lethargic and stranded on beaches when ocean temperatures fall too low. Teams patrolling beaches have pulled large numbers of these endangered and vulnerable animals from Cape Cod Bay and other shores and transported them to rehabilitation centers such as the New England Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital, where the turtles receive medical care, warmth and nourishment. Many of the rescued turtles, including a majority of endangered Kemp’s ridleys, have survived and begun recovery thanks to the dedication and tireless efforts of these volunteers and experts, offering a hopeful example of community action helping wildlife through a challenging season.
