The nonprofit organization Women’s Aid has teamed up with the National Express railroad line in the UK to form Road to Refuge— an initiative that provides free travel for women, men, and children who are escaping domestic abuse. The project was developed to help abuse victims flee dangerous situations regardless of their ability to pay, and to connect them with safe refuge locations upon reaching their destination. Once a survivor is matched with a refuge, they can travel for free to any of the 550 stops on the rail line. The refuge will then host the survivor for free while they get back on their feet. So far, Road to Refuge has helped over 7,400 survivors, 2,100 of them being children, escape abuse and reach safety.
