Music From Moth Data

Composer and violinist Ellie Wilson has created a one-of-a-kind musical piece called "Moth × Human" by transforming real flight data from 80 moth species into sound. She assigned each moth species a specific tone and worked with musicians to bring their nocturnal activity to life through violin, cello, trombone, piano, and synths. By using movement data collected at a nature reserve in the UK, Wilson’s piece demonstrates the declining biodiversity of the various species— the music starts with a haunting chorus and ends in near silence. The piece demonstrated how art and science can work together to spark action by raising awareness of insect decline. Wilson hopes that “Moth x Human” will inspire listeners to celebrate the vital, often overlooked role moths play in pollination and ecosystems.
