In Japan, an innovative program called OK Obaachan (“OK Grandma”) offers clients the chance to hire women aged 60 to 94 for companionship, emotional support, homemaking, babysitting, advice, and even attending life events like weddings or sporting matches. The service typically charges around $20–55 per hour. It serves a dual purpose: delivering warmth and trusted presence to people who may feel isolated, while providing meaningful work, income, and a renewed sense of purpose to older women who often face limited job opportunities. With around 100 grandmas currently participating, the initiative helps bridge social gaps and revalues the experience and empathy these women bring to modern life.
