Dental Floss Vaccines

Scientists have developed a groundbreaking, needle-free way to deliver vaccines—using dental floss. In a recent study, researchers coated floss with flu vaccine and gently applied it to the gums of mice, triggering a powerful immune response that protected all vaccinated mice from a deadly flu strain. The method works by targeting the junctional epithelium, a highly absorbent tissue between the teeth and gums that allows the vaccine to enter the body and activate immune cells. Early tests in humans show the approach could be feasible, and with further development, this low-cost, easy-to-use technique could make vaccines more accessible—especially in places without medical infrastructure or where needle use is a barrier.
