AI Robots Saving Languages

A Michigan nonprofit is using robotics to help preserve endangered Indigenous languages while inspiring the next generation of innovators. SkoBots are customizable, AI-assisted robots that children build themselves and program to speak their ancestral languages, including complex dialects like Anishinaabemowin. The hands-on project combines coding, engineering, and cultural education, making language learning more interactive and engaging for young people. In the process of designing robots, students gain engineering skills and build a deeper connection with their heritage. By blending technology with tradition, the program is helping preserve endangered Indigenous languages while empowering Native youth to embrace both their cultural identity and careers in STEM.
