Food Delivery Service Combats Loneliness

In Japan, a group of delivery workers known as Yakult Ladies are helping combat loneliness while delivering probiotic yogurt drinks to homes and offices. The women make regular neighborhood rounds, bringing bottles of Yakult directly to customers and stopping to chat along the way. Many of their visits have become meaningful social check-ins, especially for elderly residents who live alone and have limited daily interactions. In some communities, their deliveries are coordinated with local governments as part of welfare programs, allowing the women to notice if something seems wrong and alert others if someone needs help. The program has now expanded to China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, and Mexico, with over 50,000 participants worldwide. What began as a creative way to distribute a health drink has evolved into a quiet but powerful form of community care, showing how everyday human contact, even during a simple yogurt delivery, can help people feel less alone.
