Clean Energy From Footsteps

A British company called Pavegen is turning everyday foot traffic into clean, off-grid electricity by capturing the energy generated when people walk and converting it into usable power, offering a novel approach to urban energy production that could help cities reduce reliance on conventional sources. The company has developed smart flooring tiles that capture the kinetic energy created when people step on them and convert it into electricity. Pavagen’s technology has been installed in hundreds of locations across several countries, showing how human motion in busy public spaces can be transformed into renewable energy. When people step on the tiles, it drives an internal electromagnetic generator that stores the harvested energy in batteries or sends it directly to nearby systems. The tiles can then power streetlights, digital displays, charging stations or sensors, and they also collect anonymous data on foot traffic patterns to help cities better understand how public spaces are used.
