CA Nonprofit Fighting Homelessness

DignityMoves is tackling homelessness with a simple but effective idea: providing people with safe, private housing quickly instead of making them wait years for permanent housing to become available. The nonprofit builds interim housing communities made up of small modular cabins, each with a locking door and basic amenities, on underutilized land across California. Residents receive meals, case management, and support services while working toward long-term housing and stability. DignityMoves currently has 12 communities with several more in development and has helped nearly 2,000 people transition out of street homelessness. The model has gained national attention for being significantly faster and less expensive to build than traditional affordable housing. DignityMoves’ approach demonstrates how cities can get people off the streets more quickly while permanent housing solutions are developed.
