Dave Heeley, who friends refer to as Blind Dave, hasn’t let his blindness get in the way of his passion for cycling. The 64-year-old recently put together a team of seven cyclists, himself included, to ride 800 miles to raise money for the Albion Foundation. The Albion Foundation helps kids with disabilities achieve an active lifestyle through sports, and is the charity arm of Heeley’s favorite team— the West Bromwich Albion Football Club. Heeley used a tandem bike to trek through England with his cycling pals over the course of a week. In the process, the group raised $75,000. Heeley’s wife, who spearheaded the fundraising, decided to keep the total figure raised a secret from Blind Dave until he went to present the check to the Albion Foundation. Heeley was blown away by the amount of money his team raised for the Albion Foundation, which will be used to fund 36 disability sports teams for kids.
