Baking for the Community

Ed Hamilton-Trewhitt is using the age-old tradition of a “village oven” to bake for his community of Guisborough in England. A village oven is exactly as it sounds— an oven that is available for a community to use. Energy costs in Guisborough have skyrocketed, and Hamilton-Trewhitt, who works at a local bakery, was inspired to bring back the village oven to help his community limit their household energy usage. Residents can drop off batter at Brickyard Bakery on a Friday and pick up their baked and decorated items on Monday. Hamilton-Trewhitt offers this service free of charge, and also offers pay-as-you-can cooking classes. The philanthropic baker is dedicated to cutting his neighbors’ energy costs with this act of kindness.
