Animals Preserve African Deserts

Researchers working to combat desertification in the Sahel region of Africa discovered that African spurred tortoises could play a major role in restoring damaged land. After years of limited success with traditional tree-planting efforts, scientists introduced 500 tortoises into a barren area of the Sahara. Over the next five years, satellite imagery showed noticeable improvements in vegetation growth and soil health. The tortoises helped naturally regenerate the ecosystem by spreading seeds through their waste, digging burrows that improved water retention and soil conditions, and creating small environments where native plants could grow more easily. Scientists say the animals essentially acted as ecosystem engineers, helping grasses and shrubs return to the landscape while increasing biodiversity in the region. The project is now being seen as a promising, nature-based approach to restoring fragile environments and fighting desertification, while also helping protect the endangered African spurred tortoise species.
