At Louisa County High School in Mineral, Virginia, students in the automotive technology program are doing much more than just learning car repair skills. For the past eight years, they’ve been restoring donated used vehicles and giving them free to single mothers in need, giving both the students and the recipients something meaningful to be proud of. Each year, the teens spend months fixing up five cars, learning real-world mechanics like changing fluids, brakes and tires while knowing their work will help someone’s life in a tangible way. When single moms receive their refurbished cars, it gives them reliable transportation to get to work, care for their families, and regain stability. The school’s partnership with the local nonprofit Giving Words not only teaches technical skills but also builds empathy and community connection, showing how education combined with kindness can make a real difference for parents facing hardship.
