90-Year-Old’s Animal Sanctuary

At 90 years old, Barby Keel continues to dedicate her life to rescuing animals at the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary in Sussex, UK—a nonprofit haven she founded in 1971 after buying a plot of land with her life savings. Over the past 54 years, she has provided a safe home to more than 10,000 animals, including cats, dogs, pigs, horses, chickens, and rabbits. Despite facing personal challenges, including three battles with cancer, Keel remains unwavering in her commitment, saying she has "no plans" to retire. The sanctuary, which operates entirely on donations, recently reopened to the public, allowing visitors to connect with the animals and support her life’s work.
