Students Helping Feed Students

Kids at Summit Elementary in Butler, Pennsylvania are learning how to grow produce and give back to those in need in their community. The elementary school has built an extensive garden full of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Summit students donate the produce to Broad Street Elementary, a school in a nearby neighborhood that is located in a food desert and has minimal access to fresh produce. Teachers are able to utilize the garden in their lesson plans, teaching students about science, math, and life skills. Students are involved in every step of the planting and harvesting process and the garden has made them more excited about learning and giving back.
