Soccer Brings Amputees Together

Ukrainian soldiers who have become amputees as a result of the ongoing war with Russia have found solace in an amputee soccer league organized by the Ukrainian Football Federation. Civilian and soldier amputees gather at Bannikov Stadium every week to practice skills, work on strength training, and play full soccer games. The co-ed team has provided a community for amputees adjusting to their new lives, and is a much needed reprieve from the tragedies of war surrounding the area. A professional European soccer coach has stepped up to coach the team, which has made incredible progress since they first started playing together last year. The team’s athletes come from all sorts of backgrounds, but have bonded over their shared experiences living amid war and love of the sport.
