After being rejected by five homes for his energetic nature, a 10-year-old Springer Spaniel named Henry found his purpose with the UK’s National Wildlife Crime Unit. His keen nose allows him to detect scents of threatened species, illegally killed animals, and even tiny tracking tags removed by wildlife criminals. Henry works alongside his handler Louise Wilson in Wrexham, where he trained to identify up to seven different scents including those of otters, pine martens, hedgehogs, and other protected species. His efforts have helped conservation officers gather vital evidence on wildlife crime, showing the public that protected animals aren’t easy targets anymore. Henry’s transformation from a troubled rescue pup to an incredible conservation detection dog was recently honored by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, where he won the coveted award of Animal of the Year.
