Puffin Conservation Win

Puffins have begun nesting again on the Isle of Muck in Northern Ireland for the first time in at least 25 years, marking a major conservation success. Their return follows years of dedicated restoration work that began in 2017, when conservationists removed invasive brown rats that had been eating seabird eggs and chicks. They also improved the island’s habitat through careful land management, including winter grazing, to make it safer and more suitable for nesting birds. Only a small number of puffins have been spotted so far, but their presence is an exciting sign that the island is recovering and that long-term conservation efforts can help vulnerable seabird populations rebound.
