Photographing the Famous Spirit Bear

A rare sighting of the elusive spirit bear in Canada is drawing global attention, highlighting both the animal’s cultural significance and a major conservation success story. The spirit bear is a unique variation of the American black bear, with a rare genetic trait that gives it an all-white coat, and it exists only in the Great Bear Rainforest, where just a small number remain in the wild. First Nations communities, who have long protected the species, welcomed photographer Jack Plant to document these remarkable animals. His newly released images offer a rare glimpse into their lives—from catching salmon to moving through dense forest—bringing wider awareness to their fragile habitat. The project shows how collaboration between Indigenous communities and conservation efforts can help preserve unique ecosystems, offering a hopeful example of how endangered species like the spirit bear can be protected for future generations.
