New Mexico has launched a first-of-its-kind state-wide program that pays homeless high school students $500 a month as an incentive to stay in school. About 330 students in grades 10-12 across the state currently qualify for the initiative. In order to receive payment, they must maintain at least a 92% attendance rate, complete all homework assignments, attend academic support sessions, and regularly meet with guidance counselors. The goal is to encourage academic success and give homeless students more stability and support to work towards graduation. State leaders are optimistic that this effort will help vulnerable young people stay in school and break the cycle of poverty, helping to mitigate the educational barriers that homelessness creates.
