Turning Festival Waste Into Fertilizer

A creative environmental project in Wales, started by NPK Recovery, is turning an unexpected waste product into something powerful— festival-goers’ urine is being transformed into fertilizer to help grow a new forest. Scientists are collecting urine from portable toilets at large events, then extracting key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to create a safe, usable fertilizer. This recycled resource is now being used to plant around 4,500 trees, including species like beech and Scots pine, helping restore local woodlands while reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. The project tackles both waste management and environmental restoration, showing how something typically discarded can be repurposed to contribute to a greener future.
