Rachel Reeves, the Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the first woman ever to hold that role, has pledged to create a library in every primary school in England—targeting around 1,700 schools that currently don’t have one. Her plan will be funded with $178 million from dormant assets, and she announced it at the Labour Party Conference as part of a broader agenda on education, equity, and youth opportunity. Many children in England, especially in disadvantaged areas, lack access to dedicated book spaces. By increasing access to books, this initiative will improve literacy and build a foundation for opportunity for all students. Reeves hopes these libraries will become vibrant, lasting spaces where kids learn the power of reading and envision brighter futures.
